Shop Local - Little Boxes!

Portland Black Friday Sale Little BoxesLittle Boxes – Shop Local Black Friday Event
Friday, November 25
9 a.m. | FREE | All Ages
@ 90 Participating PDX Stores
More info: www.littleboxespdx.com
On Friday November 25, 2011, 90 plus Portland independently owned boutiques will participate in Little Boxes, a one-day collaborative Black Friday shopping event. The event includes a cross-promotional discount, in which all participating small businesses will be open 10am-8pm on Friday and will provide a 10% discount to any customer who shows a receipt from a different participating business from that day.
Any customers who visits a Little Box on Black Friday can enter to win a raffle prize. There are over 40 prizes to win, including an iPad, a one night stay at Hotel DeLuxe, $200 Gift Certificate to Wildwood Restaurant.  Everybody’s allowed one ticket per Little Box they visit and there’s no limit to how many times you can enter.
The event is named Little Boxes to represent the small businesses participating in this alternative event to the big-box, nation-wide chain stores. Unlike the big-box all-day sales featured the day after Thanksgiving to ignite the holiday shopping season, Little Boxes is focused on encouraging consumers to shop several local small business on Black Friday for chances to win raffle prizes and receive more discounts.
Some of the over 90 participating stores include Radish Underground, Mabel and Zora, Frock, Presents of Mind, betsy & iya, PedX, Tumbleweed, Manifesto, Porch Light, Flutter, and Eden. For a complete list of stores so you can map out your Little Box Black Friday shopping day, go to www.littleboxespdx.com.
Look for the Little Boxes poster at each of the participating stores for a QR code that will direct you to the Facebook event for more details. Follow along on twitter @littleboxespdx for event news.

My favorite things at TJ's.

I just wanted to make a list of my staples:

  • fleur de sel caramel sauce
  • sesame teriyaki chicken wings
  • uncured applewood bacon (like porkbelly)
  • blueberry scones (in frozen section)
  • salted dark chocolate with caramel bars
  • white basalmic vinegar
  • aged parmesian
  • organic brown rice in the frozen section
  • peanut satay sauce
Ok, I know its all healthy, but these are things I can't live without!

TMI Disclaimer- Laser Hair Removal

Warning this is a TMI post.  But, I have to do it.

I wax when I go on vacation.  And it sucks, Itched my crotch through Italy.  And then over gelato with two girls from SF, we discussed lasering your cooch. They had bought Groupons for like $100 for six treatments – hair free  for life.

I did it. It’s a long not so comfortable, but quick process.  Normally the beam is $125 a treatment, but grab one of these $99 specials on groupon, living social or sharing spree and I promise I am on 4 of 6 and feel like a new woman.

Circa 33 - Swank Monday Night Happy Hour All Night!

Today is Monday which is one of my favorite days of the week because I get to take Shelly’s yoga class, but after I like to go to this hipster bar that remind me of the Library Ale House in LA with all the liquor stacked high and a ladder to grab bottles.  Its dark, its classy and they have absinthe.

And Monday they have an all night happy hour.  The best thing on the menu is the chimichuri fires, and I ask for extra dipping sauce of chim.

Heaven on earth.  Great date place!

Breaking up with your bank -Credit Unions!

In this time of bank blah, I have to admit I let my savvy friends do the research and then recommend a credit union to me and this is who came out on top.

I love First Tech Credit Union (for those of you with HP or former there of - its the old HP CU)!

2. Checking pays 2.54% interest
3. 7-eleven atm by my house and you can make deposits and get a scanned check receipt
4. after 90 days you can scan checks from home and do direct deposit electronically w.o. using atm
5. free checks
6. I need to look into an IRA now that I am consulting/contracting

PS I think the Sees candy bars at the counter were free ; ).  Whole bars holla!

Insurance !

Today we talk insurance.  I have had the best insurance agent since I bought my first home in 2002.  Her name is Cathy Rottle with Fournier Group.  I have referred her to all friends buying homes and cars, and she basically carries all my friends. Everyone I know switches after they talk to her.

This is why she is awesome (besides the fact she is my age and calls you Honey):

1.        She makes sure your umbrella covers your home so no one can take away your assests when you are at fault for hitting that Jaguar.

2.       Every 6 mos. She re-evaluates your policy and calls you if there is a better deal.  She keeps tabs when your tickets are going to fall off! I just saved like half in car insurance when she called me as a ticket from my backing out in a parking lot jacked my rates double.

3.       She will become your friend so when you call her, please tell her you are mine.

Rushing Portland Center Stage (PCS) - $20

I am sorry I have been remiss.  I actually have been working which gave me no time to rush “Oklahoma” at Portland Center Stage, but that is the topic of this blog today.

My friend Heather has a fabulous way of checking how many seats are open on the PCS website, by pretending to buy tickets. Then we arrive about 6.30 – eat Sushi, drink prosecco and sit on the couches until 7.30 when Rush tickets are sold for $20 (as an aside the price has doubled in the three years we started doing this.).

Now, this usually secures  95% of the time amazing seats if not in the Orchestra pit or front row, but never have I wound up in the balcony because these are rich people seats, and we all know there are not many rich people in PDX that can afford them or maybe they just don’t show up so dirty cheap gals like me can get all giddy when I have the best seat in the house!
