Shop Local - Little Boxes!

Portland Black Friday Sale Little BoxesLittle Boxes – Shop Local Black Friday Event
Friday, November 25
9 a.m. | FREE | All Ages
@ 90 Participating PDX Stores
More info: www.littleboxespdx.com
On Friday November 25, 2011, 90 plus Portland independently owned boutiques will participate in Little Boxes, a one-day collaborative Black Friday shopping event. The event includes a cross-promotional discount, in which all participating small businesses will be open 10am-8pm on Friday and will provide a 10% discount to any customer who shows a receipt from a different participating business from that day.
Any customers who visits a Little Box on Black Friday can enter to win a raffle prize. There are over 40 prizes to win, including an iPad, a one night stay at Hotel DeLuxe, $200 Gift Certificate to Wildwood Restaurant.  Everybody’s allowed one ticket per Little Box they visit and there’s no limit to how many times you can enter.
The event is named Little Boxes to represent the small businesses participating in this alternative event to the big-box, nation-wide chain stores. Unlike the big-box all-day sales featured the day after Thanksgiving to ignite the holiday shopping season, Little Boxes is focused on encouraging consumers to shop several local small business on Black Friday for chances to win raffle prizes and receive more discounts.
Some of the over 90 participating stores include Radish Underground, Mabel and Zora, Frock, Presents of Mind, betsy & iya, PedX, Tumbleweed, Manifesto, Porch Light, Flutter, and Eden. For a complete list of stores so you can map out your Little Box Black Friday shopping day, go to www.littleboxespdx.com.
Look for the Little Boxes poster at each of the participating stores for a QR code that will direct you to the Facebook event for more details. Follow along on twitter @littleboxespdx for event news.

  • fleur de sel caramel sauce
  • sesame teriyaki chicken wings
  • uncured applewood bacon (like porkbelly)
  • blueberry scones (in frozen section)
  • salted dark chocolate with caramel bars
  • white basalmic vinegar
  • aged parmesian
  • organic brown rice in the frozen section
  • peanut satay sauce
Ok, I know its all healthy, but these are things I can't live without!

TMI Disclaimer- Laser Hair Removal

Warning this is a TMI post.  But, I have to do it.

I wax when I go on vacation.  And it sucks, Itched my crotch through Italy.  And then over gelato with two girls from SF, we discussed lasering your cooch. They had bought Groupons for like $100 for six treatments – hair free  for life.

I did it. It’s a long not so comfortable, but quick process.  Normally the beam is $125 a treatment, but grab one of these $99 specials on groupon, living social or sharing spree and I promise I am on 4 of 6 and feel like a new woman.

Circa 33 - Swank Monday Night Happy Hour All Night!

Today is Monday which is one of my favorite days of the week because I get to take Shelly’s yoga class, but after I like to go to this hipster bar that remind me of the Library Ale House in LA with all the liquor stacked high and a ladder to grab bottles.  Its dark, its classy and they have absinthe.

And Monday they have an all night happy hour.  The best thing on the menu is the chimichuri fires, and I ask for extra dipping sauce of chim.

Heaven on earth.  Great date place!

Insurance !

Today we talk insurance.  I have had the best insurance agent since I bought my first home in 2002.  Her name is Cathy Rottle with Fournier Group.  I have referred her to all friends buying homes and cars, and she basically carries all my friends. Everyone I know switches after they talk to her.

This is why she is awesome (besides the fact she is my age and calls you Honey):

1.        She makes sure your umbrella covers your home so no one can take away your assests when you are at fault for hitting that Jaguar.

2.       Every 6 mos. She re-evaluates your policy and calls you if there is a better deal.  She keeps tabs when your tickets are going to fall off! I just saved like half in car insurance when she called me as a ticket from my backing out in a parking lot jacked my rates double.

3.       She will become your friend so when you call her, please tell her you are mine.

Rushing Portland Center Stage (PCS) - $20

I am sorry I have been remiss.  I actually have been working which gave me no time to rush “Oklahoma” at Portland Center Stage, but that is the topic of this blog today.

My friend Heather has a fabulous way of checking how many seats are open on the PCS website, by pretending to buy tickets. Then we arrive about 6.30 – eat Sushi, drink prosecco and sit on the couches until 7.30 when Rush tickets are sold for $20 (as an aside the price has doubled in the three years we started doing this.).

Now, this usually secures  95% of the time amazing seats if not in the Orchestra pit or front row, but never have I wound up in the balcony because these are rich people seats, and we all know there are not many rich people in PDX that can afford them or maybe they just don’t show up so dirty cheap gals like me can get all giddy when I have the best seat in the house!

Restaurant.com -$25 Certificates for 2 buck chuck

I think many of you know about this, but at the end of the month you get an email from www.restaurant.com where you can get $25 dinner certificates for $2.  I never ever buy them for less than 80% off. Sign up and the end of the month promo code is "pumpkin."

That being said there are some great staples on there - like Wild Abandon and the Stepping Stone Cafe.

And good news - the Chef from Pok Pok and Ping open Manao in my hood and well, guess what I am trying this weekend.

House Cleaning

A couple of weeks ago, I mass emailed for a house cleaner.  My lovely friend Anja recommended a gal Heidi.

When she quoted me, I fell over.  I was asked to pay 6 times as much by large Walmart Cleaning Company of Merry Maids who said quote, "we need to cover our workers' minimum wage at almost $200 a cleaning."  My response "Oh yeah with being unemployed and consulting I understand and wouldn't want that so I am going to have to decline your services."

Today I came home to the cleanest, sparkly house ever.  And they love pets and were not annoyed with clutter and I am so blissed out.

So I am recommending Heidi at Clear Solutions - she even specializes in green cleaning and did so for the wood floor for my pets.  If you call her and use her, please mention my referral as I'll get a free cleaning.

Grass Fed Beef by the Freezer Load!

My tip for the day as my friend Esther pointed out is join a CSA and get your local non-hormone, grass-fed beef.  I got a cheap freezer delivered from Home Depot.  We are splitting a cow 385 lbs three ways at 2 bucks a pound.  Although organically raised, not certified as such due to the expense, but local grass fed, packaged and cut.  Can't wait!  Our beef was a 4H project - I know, I know.

But I've heard good things about Kookoolan Farms if you are looking to check it out.

Does your mom shop in the day old bread section? - Kettlman's Bagels

Hello Internet, Meh love meh some Jewish bagels and besides Montreal style at Tastebud which run 1.50 a bagel, there is the day old section at Kettlman's - a dozen in a freezer bag for 3.99.  Buy 2 at 3.99 each and get a third dozen free.

The key is freezing them.  And the best Jew way I learned from my mamma, is to defrost 30 seconds in the microwave mid-power and put in the over at 350 degrees.  Then you get nice and crispy on the outside and warm on the inside.  And just think 36 bagels for 7 bucks is like a little more than 50 cents a bagel.  For you Jews or Jew lovers - they have rye and pumpernickle.

Garden State is closing - free Meatballs Subs Today!

Sadly, today Kevin Sandri is closing Garden State for his new venture.  He already launched Burgatroyd with his wife.  The problem with this is Kevin makes the best meatball subs in the city.  They have been featured in Food and Wine, Sunset Magazine.  I lamented when he moved from Sellwood to Mississippi.  Now, I lament more.

Anyway, he is giving away his famous meatball subs today before he closes shop.  He requests only his beer mug be kept full from Prost. He can't guarantee soberness after 5pm when he says he will stay open past closing time.

Good luck Kevin!

Dosha's VIP List

Today I got my hair-coloured for 50% off! That's right! Colour those grays at Dosha.

How? Well, I am on their VIP email list. Once a year, I go to their party at one of their locations around PDX and get their VIP card, drink their 2 buck chuck and eat their Costco brownies. The card gets you 10% off all products and services.

But the best tip is......you are now on their email list. When they are having down days, you get emails like this "50% off Hair Color now through 5 October." $45 massages. Its almost a shame to make a regularly fully-paid apt. Don't.

Join the VIP club here!

Welcome to my blog how to live cheaply in PDX!

I am totally 100% sure this is and has been done, but now that I have the time on Funenjoyment I am going to give my free Jewish advice, share my wanderings, coupons, groupons, emails on the hip places in PDX....and ultimately how to live on the sly, I mean cheap.

Stay tuned!

Cheers, Deanna
